I like the suttle background of the beach and your nephews teasing smile. My nephew has the same witty smiles in pictures as well.
The main idea of the assignment was to get you to sculpt light across a face, having lighter and darker areas using window light... As long as he is so willing, why not take him by a window and try it again... see how flat and dark the light is on his face... especially the eyes?
